Perkins Memorial Platform
A Vision for Accessibility
The Palisades Parks Conservancy is dedicated to ensuring that the region’s breathtaking landscapes are accessible to all. As part of our broader initiative to improve physical accessibility in our park system, we are prioritizing the completion of the Perkins Memorial Platform, an ADA accessible viewing space perched just in front of the Perkins Memorial Tower atop Bear Mountain State Park.
The Perkins Memorial Tower honors George W. Perkins, the visionary behind the Palisades Interstate Park System. Since its dedication in 1934 the tower has offered sweeping views of the Hudson Valley and, on clear days, the New York City skyline. With a generous donation from the Perkins family, the Conservancy partnered with PIPC to build the Perkins Memorial Platform in 2019.
Today, the Platform offers the same incredible views as the 40 foot tall tower behind it, but unlike the tower which is only accessible by several flights of stairs, the platform is entirely ADA accessible. The Perkins Memorial Platform offers an intentional space for people of all abilities to behold the stunning Bear Mountain vista.
2024-2025 Transformation
Phase 1 updated the platform’s weathered surface with an ADA accessible, weather resistant fine gravel surface.
Guided by the expertise of Understory Landscape Architects, we placed stones that enhance the site’s connection to the natural landscape and provide informal seating without impeding wheelchair access.
Phase 2 will involve maintaining and supplementing native plantings, adding signage, and adding a thoughtfully designed shade structure that will offer visitors a comfortable place to take in the view.
Severe drought conditions in fall 2024 caused many of the original the plants to fail. Replacement plants will go into the ground in spring 2025.
Your support can help bring this full vision to life, making Bear Mountain’s iconic tower more inclusive and welcoming. Join us by donating to complete the Perkins Memorial Platform.
Phase 1 of Perkins Memorial Platform Project was supported by a generous donation from the late Nancy Perkins.
